Located between Brazil and the Pacific Ocean, Peru is divided by a 2,200 km section of the Andes Mountains, producing vastly different environments within its borders. On the eastern side of the Andes, the country claims part of the dense Amazon Rainforest, while the western side is characterized by an arid desert coastline. The Andes themselves cover almost a third of the country and contain some of Peru's most striking natural features such as Cordillera Blanca, Colca Canyon, and Lake Titicaca. Due to its active history, Peru is also rich in archeological treasures, such as the famous Machu Picchu ruins, Sacsahuaman, and the Nasca Lines.
